Managing People:
How Many People Do You Need?
Too many employees? Too few? How do you know when your workforce is just the right size for optimum productivity? Often the workers themselves will tell you, if you listen. According to one expert, these indicators might help you read the signals:
-
If they never complain about having too much work, and usually get all their work done, you are overstaffed.
-
If they feel pushed so hard that workplace stress is a noticeable, widespread problem, you are too lean and should selectively add staff.
-
If you get occasional overwork complaints, e.g. Accounting at month-end, or a constant but mild complaint level from a few, you are probably just about where you should be.
