"(Southern) California taxpayers are roughly twice as likely as other Americans to be called in for face-to-face audits by the IRS…" so said the Los Angeles Times in a just released story. Even after filtering out high-income taxpayers (there are more here than anywhere else) the results are the same. IRS says there are more tax flakes here than the rest of the US, so they keep more auditors here. Regardless of the IRS rationale for this disparity, which they are being pressured to correct, readers should keep the current situation in mind as they file their returns.
