Stuff: We're No. 1! Is That Good?
Parade Magazine, a syndicated newspaper magazine, publishes an annual
compilation of the standings of the U.S. and other countries in a host
of areas. Here, presented without comment, are a few of their rankings.
You draw your own conclusions. It seems the U.S. is:
#1 in number of Nobel prize winners, millionaires and billionaires,
#1 in total GNP, value of imports & exports, size of defense
budget, and gold reserves,
#1 in use of home computers, cell phones and the Internet,
#1 in AIDS cases and divorces,
#2 in percent of population attending college, but #15 in percent of
boys attending secondary school (#19 for girls),
#2 in having the widest gap between rich and poor, and in murder
among industrialized countries, both behind Russia,
#3 in movie production, but #1 in movie exports,
#3 in health expenditures per capita, but #29 in infant mortality,
#16 in maternal mortality,
#11 in percent of government income from personal income taxes, but
#70 in percent of government income from corporate income taxes,
#29 in percent of the population owning their homes, but #1 in
ownership of mobile homes.
