Press Release
Gene Siciliano announces newly published book:
Finance for Non-financial Managers
New treatment of an always timely topic, this is the newest member of the McGraw-Hill Briefcase Book series
Los Angeles, May 12, 2003: "Accounting is like a football game." So says author and financial management expert Gene Siciliano CMC CPA in his new book, Finance for Non-financial Managers, which has just been published by McGraw-Hill.
About the Book
The book fills a need in the education of middle managers and small business people who must deal with finance and accounting to succeed, or even to survive, but who just don't feel comfortable with the language or the concepts. These people exist throughout the ranks of big corporations, or at the head of their own businesses, and they want to be successful in an increasingly complex financial world.
These men and women are making financial decisions almost daily, from budget management to interpreting financial reports to negotiating bank loans. And only a couple years ago, hundreds of dotcom companies failed in part because their founders couldn't grasp the basics of finance well enough to evaluate the viability of their own business models. Mr. Siciliano knows that, because he advised a number of these founders in his consulting work, and he saw the challenge they had in this area, in spite of their college degrees.
The problem these readers face is that books which are supposed to address their needs are either written by accountants in modified accounting language, or by non-financial managers who really don't know that much about finance. This book is different because the author is different and the approach is different.
The book is different because it uses a minimum of accounting terminology and instead uses terms that people can relate to. It uses original ideas from Mr. Siciliano's workshops to make complex concepts easier to understand. For example, it uses a football game to demonstrate the flow of financial information during the life of a company. It uses buckets on a scale to help people understand how a balance sheet works. The six myths of business planning help people chuckle about their own resistance, yet still get the point. For example, myth no. 4 says: "Business moves too fast to be held back by a plan." The reality, of course, is that unplanned speed of execution often results in costly errors. For some, those errors have proven fatal to their business goals.
The book doesn't try to impress people with what the author knows, but rather it helps them learn how to use finance in their businesses. We believe it will make a difference in the education and success of countless business people in our community and across the country.
